Opening reception: Saturday, Februray 23rd, 6-8 pm

Marian Goodman Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new photographs by Jeff Wall which will open on February 23rd and will run thru March 22nd, 2008.

The exhibition will feature six black-and-white pictures and two back-lit color transparencies in which Jeff Wall continues to explore the realist potential of picture-making and the 'near-documentary' through large-scale photography.

In the light box works, the artist draws on the collage of everyday life, observed and lived moments, concrete and specific, whether in Church, Carolina Street, an unassuming Pentecostal church on a winter day, or in Dressing Poultry, a candid scene between four workers in a rural slaughterhouse preparing chickens for market.

The new black & white works combine the documentary and the cinematographic. Three documentary pictures of unoccupied spaces include Cold Storage; Fortified Door; and Rock Surface 1 & 2. In another group of works, realism and invention intersect. Men Waiting, the largest of the new pictures, shows a group of laborers gathered beneath a morning sky; Tenants, a moment in a suburban social housing building; and War Game, a group of young boys playing out an imaginary battle on an empty lot.

Recently, the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin presented Jeff Wall: Exposure, an exhibition commissioned by the museum which presented four of the new black-and-white works.

Over the past three years, several important retrospectives which have been presented in the U.S. and Europe.
